Facebook spends $400M to buy GIF site Giphy
Facebook has acquired popular GIF publishing site Giphy will incorporate it into Instagram.
According to Axios, the social network is spending $400 million to buy Giphy. But naturally, many people have questions about acquisition.
Now that Facebook has assumed direct control over Giphy, one can only expect it will harvest even more info about users. Your choice of GIFs might not seem significant, but to advertising agencies, it could say a lot about you.
Will Facebook start using Giphy for data collection and tracking? What about access? Will the service remain open to other products including Twitter, Reddit and encrypted messaging app Signal?
For now, Shah says nothing is changing, including access to the Giphy API…
“Giphy will continue to operate its library (including its global content collection), and we’re looking forward to investing further in its technology and relationships with content and API partners,” he added. “People will still be able to upload GIFs; developers and API partners will continue to have the same access to Giphy’s APIs; and Giphy’s creative community will still be able to create great content.”
